Collision Industry Job Descriptions: Claims Representative

Description

Works directly with customers (insureds or claimants) through the claims process to conclusion. Coordinates efforts of other claims employees to keep the claim process moving and keep everyone aware of that process. Documents all claim activity on computerized claims systems. Follows company processes to insure a fast and fair claims settlement, while maximizing customer satisfaction.

 

Personal Characteristics and Skills

Needs to manage relationships in a fast paced environment and work under pressure. Must communicate effectively with customers, employees, and vendors. Must be comfortable working in an office, communicating by phone, and working with detailed reports. Needs writing, negotiating, and organization skills. Must be able to develop and maintain excellent customer service habits.

 

Job Outlook

Insurance is involved in settling most auto collision events. With more vehicles and more miles driven every year, collision losses are inevitable and many insurance companies have claim representatives help settle these claims. People with experience and good “people” skills will always be in demand.

 

Pre-Employment Education and Experience

Math, reading, and computer skills are necessary to understand claims processes and use computer software. A proven record in customer service positions is important. A four-year college degree is required. Bilingual skills are a plus.

 

Earnings

Depending on location and pay plan, earnings may start between $25,000 and $35,000. Increases depend on experience and performance. Benefits may include insurance and pension plans.

 

Career Path

This is an entry-level position for insurance companies and can lead to future advancement including adjusters, managers, and other claims department positions. This position can lead to other related businesses including collision repair businesses, independent appraisal companies, and educational organizations.

 

Continuing Education

Internal company education programs for advancement or to meet state and local licensing requirements. Outside training through organizations including American Educational Institute (AEI), Automotive Management Institute (AMI), Insurance Institute of America (IIA), and Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters (CPCU).
